What exactly is "Other" in the storage on our phones?

Obviously I know what "Apps" "Audio" and "Pics" are but in iTunes, at the bottom, what all is stored in the "Other" section?

I have close to 1GB and I have no clue what it even consists of.

Anything that doesn’t fall into the categories listed (apps, music, video, photos) ... it’s made up of stuff like contacts, messages, email, app data, game data...

its usually all cydia and jailbreak stuff. its not categorized by apple but it still takes up space so its just referred to as other. if you use your iphone as flash drive by storing stuff with ssh in it they count towards that too.
