Can I send it back to be replaced for free or do I have to buy a new one?

Most likely you will need to replace yourself. HOWEVER, you should call, you might get lucky. Perhaps they have longer than the standard 1 year warranty, or maybe there will be special circumstances, that will enable them to allow you a return/replacement i.e company wants to build good will, OR there is a recall issue. Contact them and at least try. Be honest, and see what happens! :)
