Why would my compass no longer work properly? Not pointing any where near north.

After more than 15 years covering everything Apple, it’s with a heavy heart we announce that we will no longer be publishing new content on iMore and the iMore forums will be closing as of November 1st, 2024.

Case on the phone with a magnet in it? In a building with metal, lots of electrical noise, or and area of RF interference?

Have you calibrated it in a while (ever)?

It has me calibrate it at almost every start up (rolling the ball around the circle).

Do you have compass calibration toggled on in system services located in location services?

You gotta turn off calibration after you've calibrated it...that could be causing an issue for you.

The only thing in location services is to set location on or off or use while in app. There's no calibration stuff there.

Go to Settings>Privacy>Location Services. Then scroll to the bottom to System Services there you will find Compass Calibration toggle.

It appears that I have my compass working now. Spent a couple hours on the apple care chat and they walked me through how to do a backup and restore in iTunes.

It's needed for my sky view app.

The Sky View only uses magnetic north? Or would true north work if it's toggled on?
