I know that many people counsel waiting for a few days to install OS updates on devices, to make sure there aren’t issues updating. I usually don’t wait with iOS, but this is a perfect example of why this is good advice for watchOS. Unlike a Mac or an iOS device, there is no way for a user to recover from a bricked watchOS update without help from Apple.

Good point. Good thing I wasn’t affected by this bricking issue.

Yeah I think in the future I'll definitely be waiting. Thankfully I updated without issue before it was pulled, but I wasn't thinking about the fact that they might push an update that could brick the watches and it wouldn't be recoverable since I've had my watch for like a week and it's my first. As soon as I read the reports in here I had immediately texted my wife and told her to hold off since she had updated her phone at the same time as me but had not put her watch on the charger yet.

I also imagine it's gotta be a royal pain for Apple to have to get replacements out for anyone with a AW4 since they're still trying to get all the backordered new ones out as well. I'm guessing they must have some reserves in the stores or something for problems like this but still.

I always "try and wait" a few hours before updating. With my Watch, I need to update it from home, so it's a very good thing that I waited. I also had texted my sister when the updates were initially released and told her to update when she got home. Luckily, I saw John Yester's post when I was on my way home from work and called her and told her to skip it for now! She's only had her series 4 for two weeks. I would have felt awful if her new watch had gotten bricked. Ugh.

Will the problem turn out to be with Watch Series 4 or with the Watch OS 5.1? My guess since they did not catch the problem before releasing Watch OS 5.1 is that it is an interaction between the watch hardware and the OS.

How Apple could miss a bug that bricked the watches is beyond me. One possibility is that the watches they were testing it on already had the 5.1 developer beta on them, and that the official version didn’t brick those watches. I had the developer beta installed when I installed the official 5.1 before it was pulled (after removing the beta certificate) and had no problem. Just a guess.

So far the majority of the bricks are on series 4 watches, but don't know if it's been primarily GPS only or LTE models.
