Why when my iPhone XR is in portrait mode doesn’t the volume indicator come on the left side of phone. It comes on top of screen instead.

I know that Instagram was one of those that had their own volume indicator.

My “Ringer” volume always shows at the top. My audio volume for music shows on the side...

Same way with the 11 Pro Max. Ringer across the top and volume on the side.
