Voice Call Quality Problems

I just switch my wife and I from ATT 4's to Verizon iPhone 5's. From the very first phone calls we have made we have both noticed that voices sound digitized, or as if you are speaking on a bad speakerphone system. Sometimes it seems like the very first sound or last part of a sentence is cut off. The quality is noticeably worse then with our 4's on ATT. We have tried using the phone with LTE turned on and off, I have restarted the phones, and reset the carrier settings. Nothing has helped. When we try a call from a landline, the landline caller does sound better than the iPhone 5 caller, but still not great.

There is an 11 page thread in Apple Support about this issue, and it sounds like it is something that is happening on multiple carriers.

So has anyone on iMore experienced the same issue or heard of this issue? It is incredibly frustrating and we don't know whether to switch back to ATT (we are still in the 14 return period for Verizon) because it doesn't seem assured that we won't have the same issue on ATT.

I am on AT&T with an Iphone 5 and my phone calls are choppy with full bars on the signal. It is quite frustrating and inconsistant. Sometimes the phone calls are fine, but other times for no rhyme or reason they are choppy and I can't hardly understand the person. Does anyone else have an suggestions of anything that could help? BTW this is my second Iphone 5. I exchanged my first one at an Apple store a week after launch. The first one did the same thing with phone calls and it had something under the screen.

I too am on AT&T and honestly I've been very surprised! With my past iPhone's on the network, I would have the dreeded cut-off calls and dropped calls like everyone previously had. Although, with the iPhone 5 I have great service, great reception and knock on wood, I have not had any cut of calls or dropped calls. One thing I had to get used to was the noise cancelling that this new iPhone provides. It switches off and on depending on your surrounding noise. Maybe this could be your problem to the voice sounding like it's cutting off??? I'm not sure that this is an answer to your problem, but there are a lot of helpful people on this forum, so I'm sure someone has an answer for you. Hope everything works out for you, because this phone truely is amazing!

Eric808, thanks for the reply. I love the phone except for this. Admittedly it's a kind of big annoyance.

It's not the noise cancellation, although that may be part of the problem. It is the digitizing of our voices during the conversation, like we are being auto tuned that is the big issue. It makes it hard to understand the person talking and sounds robotic. It doesn't sound nearly as natural as my 4 did on AT&T.
