Vista Sync

I want to sync my contacts with my laptop runnning Vista. However, I wanted to keep them separate form my existing Vista Windows Contacts. I created a sperarate group called iphone contacts and when I sync to them all of my phone contacts go into the group, but also into the regular contacts. Is there a way to keep them separate? Or should I just sync them to my gmail account? And if I want to sync them to my gmail account, how do I do that since I heard that I would lose everything if I tried to do that. Please help. Thanks.
