Upgrading from 3.1.2 to 4.0 on the 3G.

I'm still running 3.1.2 firmware on my 3G. Phones getting a bit unstable so want to do a restore with a bit of an OS upgrade. I have restored 3.1.2 firmware, a few times with the trusty Shift button. A lot of the apps need 4.0 to work on the iPhone. So I've just downloaded the firmware 4.0 ready for the 3G. One or two questions before I DNF it. I've read that 4.0.1 or 4.1.0 is a better upgrade than 4.0, it has a few more tweeks from apple. (True/Untrue?) Does it matter what update I go to, assuming I can't go all the way to the latest OS as it's probably not JB yet. I've read that the 3G can suffer after the upgrade to 4.0. Are there apps that will no longer work? And lastly, I've been still JB the device after a restore, with Blackra1n as I always have. If I take the OS up to 4.0? will I still use blackra1n or www.JB Me.com.. Or am I going back to JB school.

With 3G iphone, from 4.0 and above, Apple implemented SHSH checks to allow / deny you the ability to restore / install the firmware. Thus, if you want to 4.0, you need to 4.0 SHSH files saved and use Tinyumbrella or edit your host file to trick itunes into allowing you to install it. If you don't have SHSH files saved, you can't install it. And, 4.0.2 is better than 4.0. You can still unlock 4.0.2.

If you don't have any SHSH files saved, you can still create or find a 4.2.1 custom firmware (one that keeps your current baseband = unlock) to update.

I don't think that's true...as far as I know, 3G models never need SHSH files and can restore to any firmware. I think you may still need a way to kick it out of recovery sometimes, but you shouldn't need any saved SHSH blobs for a 3G.

Yes, I have been told the same thing. I tried to get an understanding of what the two phones were doing differently as I understand the 3GS SHSH settings throws up a fake firewall to make it think it's contacting apple for the information of what OS the iPhone was upgraded to but I don't know what the 3G does differently.
