Update?

I have an iPhone 4 everytime I connect to iTunes it ask to update. My service is currently turned off and I use the iPhone as a iPod touch. If I update will my phone lock up?

No, it shouldn't. iTunes is alerting you that iOS 5.1 is available for your device. You can either ignore it like you've been or update.
