Unlocking - Can I revert to a previous version?

I have a recently jailbroken 3gs. Now, I'm more than aware that unlocking on 3.1.3 is not an option, however can I revert (or downgrade) to 3.1.2 and then unlock? Is this even possible or do I have to wait until an unlock is available for this version?

You answered the question yourself. Once you have gone to 3.1.3, unlocking is not an option regardless of whether you downgrade to 3.1.2 - it won't change the baseband.

You can create a "custom firmware" with tools like pwnage or sn0wbreeze that will NOT upgrade the baseband.
