Unlock 3GS with BB 05.16.02

I'm a little confused with all of the recent changes with jailbreaking and ios 5.1 that were announced in late December. I have a 3GS with BB 05.16.02 and it's currently on ios 4.3.5. I'd first like to erase the phone in total (I'm reselling it), then jailbreak and unlock it. I believe I can upgrade to ios 5.1 after I reset all settings and jailbreak it based on the recent developments, but I don't know if that'll change my BB or if I need to save it, or if it makes any difference since neither are unlockable.

Basically, what recommendations does anyone have for being able to unlock, untethered, my 3GS?

In your case does not really matter(if you say you have an unsupported baseband for unlock) if you update normally or using a custom firmware, but would recomend using a custom firmware that preserves baseband. You will be able to jailbreak untether, but if you want to unlock the only way is by updating to ipad baseband.Be carefull if you have a newer iphone (from this year), do not update your baseband

My 3GS is not new, so I'm guessing that won't be a problem. Will I lose anything if I upgrade to the iPad baseband? Will it affect GPS? Should everything work OK on it?
