“The British government had reportedly requested that the company remove end-to-end encryption on the platform in the name of security.”

Forget the UK and the EU and their socialist crap for a minute.

My question is. If as a US citizen with a US based AppleID (Account) on my iPhone, will my iMessages still be encrypted while I am traveling in Europe given I will be communicating with people back here in the US?

You have nothing to worry about right now, the encryption is still in place and not bypassed by the eu or the uk.

Errr … it’s actually right-wing Tory crap …

But to answer your question: yes the E2EE will still be in place. Elsewhere in Europe in the EU too, unless it introduces a similar law in the future, although I doubt it, as nearly all of continental Europe is hooked on the WhatsApp kool-aid — even worse than here in the UK.

Considering the current UK Government seems to unofficially conduct its business via WhatsApp (which despite being Facebook-in-disguise uses the gold standard of E2EE), I really can’t see how they’re going to take the plunge. Could be the final nail in the Tory coffin at next year’s general election.

That’s a great point. What’s app will have to open up their monopoly in the eu and uk .
