I've about had it with the ****ty Siri Touchpad remote... it registers swipes when I don't want it too (particularly bad with DirectvNOW), and doesn't respond other times.

Would the old remote work... being IR based???

I have the Apple TV 4... honestly should have never "upgraded" from my Apple TV 3...

You can always download the Apple TV Remote app. Have you taken the remote to theApple Store? I have a 4th Gen Apple TV & haven’t had any issues using it with DirecTvNOW or any other streaming service.

I’m reviving this thread. My Siri Remote is trash now and I’m not paying $59 for a new one. What are some good alternatives that isn’t the Remote app on my phone?

The Siri Remote on the 4th Gen Apple TV and the Apple TV 4k use bluetooth. So I bet the old ones won't work.

There is a way to adjust the scrolling speed on the remote. https://www.macworld.com/article/3000918/home-players/tips-and-tricks-for-the-new-apple-tvs-siri-remote.html

I do not know if you could use one of the game controllers to navigate the Apple TV, but maybe.
