Thinking of getting a new MBP, buy now or wait?

I currently have an early 2011 15" MacBookPro; 2.2GHz, 8GB RAM, with a 256GB solid state harddrive.

The harddrive has been full for a while now, and it's been a pain to keep transferring stuff to external hard drives. The computer runs well; it's slowing down a bit, but the solid state drive is great (it still reboots in seconds). But there is a good amount of physical wear and tear and the harddrive space is killing me.

I don't need a new computer immediately, but I am looking to upgrade soon. I don't follow the computer release cycles, so when should we be expecting a new set of MacBookPros? Anytime within the next few months? Also, should I wait for Yosemite before upgrading? Will having the new operating system make transferring contents from my current computer to a new one smoother? (I ran into issues transferring stuff when switching computers in the past).

Find a machine with the specs you want, and just do it... If you decide to wait for the next big thing all the time, you'll always be waiting.

And if you get something, and something new comes along - you can always sell the one you just got, and put the proceeds towards the new one.

If you're going to buy a model with a dGPU, I'd wait. I'd expect the next gen models to get bumped to at least a GT850M. That along with Broadwell would be worth waiting for. If you're just buying the base model then buy it when you need it. The CPU upgrade alone will probably only give you better battery life and marginally better graphics.

The only real reason I would wait is mainly for the new OS. Seems like with Yosemite, transferring my hard drive data from one computer to the new one would be more seamless. Also, Apple is usually pretty predictable about when new computers come out. If new MBPs usually come out in September/October, I can wait until then.

They were refreshed about a week and a half ago. They definitely won't be upgraded before the end of the year, let alone the next 1-2 months.

Thanks for the replies guys! I think I'll wait for Yosemite to drop and then pick up a new MBP.

Yosemite is a free upgrade so it doesn't really matter if you buy now.

Right, I just think it will be easier/smoother transferring everything from my old computer to the new one if they are both running Yosemite. The OS stressing compatibility between devices and all haha

There's never a "good time".

Though if you're a student you can take advantage of the student discount available now and slight price drop for older models.

A few thoughts:
First, they just refreshed the rMBP in early August so you will not see a new version before the end of the year, most likely.

Second, it doesn't really seem like your current computer is in that bad shape. Have you tried storing some of your files on the cloud to free up hard drive space? Also, how about using a thumb-drive to give you some cheap, added storage? Or, there are some very small external drives out there. You can get a top of the line drive for a fraction of the cost of replacing your computer. iMore just wrote a post about this a couple of days ago.

Third, with 8GB of RAM you should not be having performance issues, at all. You have a good computer, with solid state drive and plenty of RAM. Sounds like you might need a hard drive wipe and clean install.

Fourth, have you tried to ask the Genius Bar about this transfer issue you talk about? Personally, when I get a new computer I reinstall all the programs myself, I don't use Apple's transfer whatever it's called. And, I have all my files backed up on Dropbox and an external drive.

Fifth, there's no need to wait and/or buy a new computer with Yosemite. It's a free upgrade, and should run fine with 8GB of RAM.

Bottom line, I'd wait for the Broadwell machines to come out, most likely early 2015. Your system just needs a little fine tuning.
