I haven't notice any change in battery life with iOS 8.1.2 on my 5s, but I'm going to pay more attention for the next couple of days and see....will report back.

I don't consider the 5s an older device. I have restored my phone a few days back, but no luck. So I guess the next update will solve my battery life issue

I really didn't mean to imply that the 5S is old (by all means it isn't!). But phones remind me of "dog-years" where they become old faster: New chips in new phones can handle new iOS better, ya know ...

That was my main concern and the reason I didn't update. I finally got my battery usage under control

Nope, you can only choose to 'not update'. But you will always see the badge on Settings app

It's an OCD trap most people can't stand the red badge but I have some many on each screen so it doesn't bother me much
