The difference between a iphone, ipod touch and ipad?

To me, the iPad seems just like a giant iPod touch. How are they different? Does the iPad have different capabilities? I already have an iPod touch, so would it be a waste to get an iPad?

Aside from the obvious capabilities that these devices have, the big difference is the size of the screen and the performance chip.

The bigger question is what and how do you plan on using your iPad for that you can't do with your iPhone and/or iPod touch? To me that's the question of why you would need an iPad.
