Hey so i’ve been very very against the X from day one of the announcements of the current line up of iPhones. I don’t think it’s a bad phone my issue was always this i don’t see how it’s better than the iPhone 8 or iPhone Plus. For me i always judge a phone mainly by the internals. For the most part outside of camera hardware and Touch ID/Face ID i find they’re identical. To me screen size and resolutions are null and void because i think it’s all about PPI that counts on phones. Now keep in mind this is ALL my opinion based on MY needs/usage/wants so please don’t feel like i’m trying to take away anything from anyone else who might or might not see things different than me or view other things that might be more or less important. So I preordered the iPhone 8 Plus on day 1 got it on release day I was very happy never did i feel like i wanted the X or regretted my decision. I am a guy who actually prefers smaller phones i have an iPad i carry around with me and i’m all about having the one handed capability. Before anyone asks why i decided against going for th 8 instead of the 8+ the reason is very simple my boss over a year ago gave me the chance to get an iPhone 7+ for free through work it was my first “phablet” you could say. i got accustomed to having the duel lens set up i don’t use the bokeh feature a lot but before i would take great pictures and add it after the fact in editing, during my time with 7+ i was like hey not bad one less edit i need to do so i ordered the 8+. Fast forward 2 weeks ago i got a offered an X for a straight swap of my 8+ i was like hell why not i’ll try it as my work is giving me a new 8+ in exactly a week from now so worse case i sell the X and go to my 8+ that i’ll be getting through work or maybe i fall in love with the X and sell the 8+ when i get it. Work is good to me in that way that they give me the phone and it’s mine to do with so long as i am answering my work calls haha.

Now so i’ve been using the X for two weeks now and i’m even more convinced that i was right in my opinion that they’re both the same phone just one gives you a bigger screen and Face ID and Touch ID cancel one another out. Face ID i’ll admit isn’t as nice as Touch ID in my opinion but that being said it’s better than i expected my hope is over time some software enhancements will make it even smoother. However the one thing that made me decide i’ll keep the the X and sell the 8+ when i get it next week it’s finally having a high end device that i can wrap my hand around the entire phone! I still wish the X was 16:9 aspect ratio instead of 18:9 but i’m making do.

Any tips on what if anything that could improve Face ID let me know or anything at all to improve my experience even further that be great i feel like i have to relearn all the shortcuts again. Sorry for the long post and thank you in advance for any suggestions/tips

I have been going to the roller coaster of buying and selling iPhone 8 Plus and x .. now I’m with an x .. throughout this journey I came to conclusion that no phone is perfect .. IPhone 8 Plus has this great battery life while iPhone X has new design and vibrant oled display .. while I tried iPhone 8 Plus many times for its battery endurance, I always tend to come back to x just because iPhone 8 Plus is an same 4 years old design with bezels and can not stand against Samsung galaxy phones in term of edge to edge design and 2ndly this is last generation of Touch ID and lcd display in an iPhone if I’m not wrong so from now on we will see more bezel-less iPhones all around.

I went the different route. I returned the iPhone 8 Plus and got the X instead. The X has more forward-thinking design choices. It's something we're going to have to get used to because it seems like, based on rumors, that the "traditional" iPhone won't be a choice this fall. I also kept the X because of the dual OIS in the cameras. OIS helps take better low-light photos.

As for getting better results with FaceID, you don't need to wait for the lock to unlock. Just raise your phone and swipe up right away. It should unlock.

Good luck!

Not much I can offer for Face ID. It's just not as great, in my opinion. My experiences aren't the greatest with it. I did turn off the requirement for attention. I had slight improvements with that. Overall though, some times are better than others with FaceID.

One thing I tried, the last time I set up FaceID, is the first time I held the phone down below my face quite a ways -- not quite waist high but not much above it. The second time (since it does two passes of your face) I moved the phone up, about as far up as it would let me go while registering my face -- I seem to recall it was about shoulder height, lower than my chin. The idea being to give different "views", much like how they tell you to move your finger when setting up TouchID.

I'm not sure how much it has helped, but FaceID does work fairly well for me. It is also worth noting that it should improve overtime, as it updates your face each time you unlock your phone.
