Oh yeah, they have a max of 5 lines per account. You could probably open another line but it would be on a seperate plan or just cancel his line now and open a new one and get the phone at the discounted price. Either one would kind of be a hassle and the 2nd option he would have to change his number but if you really absolutely wanted to get it for him and didn't have all the funds it would be something to consider

I do hope that no one thinks I'm giving my son preferential treatment. My daughter is a freshman in college (unfortunately no scholarships ) but I and the rest of the family help her quite a bit. I just wanted to do something nice for my son because he does work hard and hasn't complained.
