sorting imported documents into Mac mini

I have just got my mac mini and am horrified by the thought of having to go through and tag my acres of documents that i have downloaded from my pc where they were all kept in different named files. There must be a way of keeping the files in their individual allocated sections - please!

Can you not upload your documents and folders to Dropbox or another cloud service or even a USB drive and then "transfer" them over to your Mac? Why do you need to "import" anything?
