Something that surprised you with the XR?

What surprised me was how much I liked it when I could hold one in my hands at the store for the first time.
I liked it better than my X (too small) and better than the max (too big), and I found the screen to be superb (as opposed to what the spec-junkies on Youtube etc. "expected" or "predicted").
So I purchased the red one and am very happy. I don't see any pixelation, Colours are great, and even compared to my X's OLED, the blacks don't look bad or washed out.

Awesome! Welcome to the club! I hope you enjoy your Xr.

I'm going to pick your brain a little since you are coming from the X like I am. Majority of posts on here are of people coming from the 6,7, and 8 which is expected. Having used an OLED display on the X, along with the dual camera and 3D touch, do you feel as if you downgraded? What made you not stick to your X?

I have the X now and got the XR, I like you LOVE the size compared to the X. The X size is great and compact but it sometimes feels a little crammed. I tried the max but like you said it is WAY too large for me. The XR is a great size for me but I feel like I'm trading off the size for lacking features that I will miss on my X.

  • 3D touch: don't miss it, but I only used it on the lock screen and in control center on older iPhones, where it still works - in form of haptic touch, which almost feels identical and does the same. Others may miss the option of getting an options menu displayed by 3D touching app icons. I don't.
  • Although the screen of the X being bigger than eg the screen of the 8, it turned out to be too small for me, as eg certain websites get formatted in a way that they were sometimes difficult for me to read, especially in the morning, without my glasses. Also, unlike the 8, iOS on the X does not allow for choosing enlarged display, something that I never really understood (screen ratio issue?). So I found certain displays (email, websites etc.) even easier to read on the 8 than on the X, which was kind of strange. Now the XR does have a larger display, and also allows to enlarge it, without being as huge as an 8+ or the max - which is perfect for me. I can read everything now, even in the morning, even without my glasses. I would have not liked the XR if the screen was bad, which is absolutely not the case, like I said already.
  • I might, at some few occasions, miss the zoom lens, but that has not happened yet, and the picture quality of the camera on the XR is outstanding imho. What I would definitely appreciate is if Apple would extend portrait mode to non-facial objects too, maybe that will happen in a future iOS release.
So for me, the benefits of the XR outweigh its "shortcomings", compared to the X/Xs/max , by far.

Thanks so much for the thorough explanation. I thought I had it all figured out and was going to stick to my X, but you have swayed me to rethink my decision. I have to get it out of my head that it is a downgrade because of the LCD display and thicker bezels.

Get what works for you. Apple makes lots of variations of Macs. The iPad Air isn’t inferior or a “downgrade” to a MacBook Pro because it doesn’t have the Touch Bar. It is just an alternative.

I think I only miss 3D Touch a little. I used it a bit on my iPhone 6s, but less so on the 7. On that one, I mainly used it for opening the camera, particularly the front-facing one. I found myself actually trying to do that on my new iPhone XR, but of course it didn't work. I don't know what I was expecting. I did try out the Haptic feature with the flashlight last week and it was okay. Although I definitely liked 3D Touch, it's definitely not a deal-breaker for me to not have it on my XR.

I'm also gradually getting used to the larger size of this phone. I think it helps that I'm mainly using a case with a finger loop on the back. I also initially thought the XR was pretty hefty, but a couple of nights ago, I was telling my mom (who has the iPhone SE) that it's starting to feel lighter to my hand.

I'm not even on T-Mobile but I feel like I noticed the same with reception being no different. I thought it was just me.

Yeah, it's weird. I'm hoping it's just that these extra bands haven't been fully pushed just yet. I was actually getting excited a couple of Sundays ago when I went to BJ's with my mom. That store is in the basement of the building and I still had full service when I first stepped into the store. We were dumping water bottles to get the deposit back and then, next thing I knew, when I again looked down at my phone, I had no service. I told my mom that I spoke too soon. LOL

I got used to the thicker bezels after ~3 minutes of using it (means: I no longer notice them, nor do they feel intruding or so). If there is anything I would criticize on that phone: I wish it was a bit lighter…...however, this might be owed to the excellent build quality, and might need some more time to getting used to. And, compared to the X, the difference is not really that noticeable. I'm more thinking back to the 6/7/8 times (and I know this is an unfair comparison).

Yeah I think that is my issue, is that comparing to the 6/7/8 it's a huge upgrade. The X is hard to compare.

I was at an Apple Store last week to make a return. I was surprised at how nice the screen actually looked. Didn't at all remind me of the iPhone 8 screen. Held my XS Max next to it and went through the Apple stock apps screens side by side and I was pleasantly surprised.

The screen isn't as bad as people make it out to be. If Apple had only released the XS and the XR this year I most likely would have gone with the XR simply based on the larger screen.

I do not have one but I stopped in to get a Series 4 watch and quickly looked at the Xr next to the Xs Max. I have thought I would opt for the Max because of the screen, but I was really shocked with how nice the screen on the Xr is add the better battery life along with the savings makes the Xr much more attractive to me. I am hoping there might be some Christmas sales with this low demand I am reading about

Got an XR this past Saturday. I have the 8 and an 8 Plus.

What mildly surprised me was how fast the facial recognition is. Also surprised at how I really don't miss the Home button and touch I.D. once I got accustomed to this device (didn't take long ... maybe a day or less).

I like I can use this phone one-handed easier than the 8 Plus. I like that. Very pleased that I bought this.

Coming from a 6 plus I agree with all of this.

I’m really surprised how much I enjoy it. Had the XS Max and was never really happy with it. Got tired of the size. Normally I love large phones but since I also now have a iPad Pro I don’t need that large of screen. The battery life has been great so far. And the signal has been awesome compared the the Max I had. Could be a software upgrade made it better. I’m not sure. But overall I’m digging this phone. I may have to take it back and get the blue since i chickened out lol.

Yeah. I thought about blue then chickened out. Went today to switch it out to blue and got cold feet again. Prob should just stick with black. I like it. Just want to try a different color sometimes lol.

Haha I know what you mean! I feel like if you get the XR you can't pass up a color! That's what sets the device apart!
