Slow iOS 4 install

I have a 3GS. Downloaded the new OS no problem but it's been taking forever to install. For the last almost 3 hours it says "Waiting for iPhone" in iTunes and the phone shows the Apple logo screen with the status bar (which is empty at the moment). How long is this going to take? Think I might have to keep this running all night? Man I hope not.

Ok I've never had this problem before. How do I start again when my phone is frozen on the logo screen and I'd have to force a shutdown of iTunes?

Mine stalled for an hour at "backing up the iphone". I eventually had to do a restore to new, and then the iOS4 upgrade succeeded.
