Siri on iPhone 4

I could almost be certain that, like everyone has been saying, a jailbreak will likely be the only way Siri will run on your iPhone 4 - and it will likely run poorly compared to the 4S. This isn't bashing, it's just likely the truth.

Yes, Apple is marketing Siri on the 4S to sell it, but you have to understand they were built for one another. You can get Siri running on the iPhone 4 eventually, but it just won't run as smoothly or as Apple intended on older devices. There's no reason to get bitter - any of you folks with an iPhone 4 who are bitter about not ordering a 4S, get on Craigslist and sell your 4 for about $300 - $400, then go buy yourself a 4S. There's no reason to badmouth something that's not even released yet like anyone really knows. More light will be shed on the subject after the device release, and everyone will sound more credible.

So be happy, iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S - you still have a killer device.

Siri on Iphone4S iOS5 - Yes
Siri on Iphone4 iOS5 - No
Siri did exist in the app store on the iphone4 prior to Apple buying it and modifying it and throwing it at the Iphone4S for a strong selling point.
So some kind of Siri technology is definately possible on the Iphone4. Anyone thats educated in the jailbreak world knows, that anything that the mind can come up with a developer can do it in jailbreak form of course. The devs have already looked at Siri and will have to make there own version of it to work on the Iphone4. Apple made it hard to just copy and throw at the Iphone4. The devs will have to spend some good time and research for it to work on the Iphone4. One day we will see some kind of Siri technology available in a jailbroken app. 4 years ago people would say it would be impossible to sync a phone over wifi and now look. Tether a phone as a modem. Advanced Voice Control on the iPhone4 from Apple will never happen. Its up to whoever that wants to develop it to make it now.

Siri on the older hardware was dramatically dumbed down and had a very high failure rate. The developer has stated the 4S is the first hardware capable of running the full system.

If the feature requires logging into an apple server to use, like the old app did, i gather it would be easy for apple to limit users of the server to 4S users, meaning that JB may not help any. But if it will be possible, it makes sense that it would require a jailbroken phone.

I suspected as much. That probably means that Apple will be able to limit siri to whichever devices it wants, and us iP4 users are pretty much going to be on the outside looking in when it comes to Siri.

In a non-jailbroken state yes. But through Cydia and jailbreaking they have there own servers and don't need Apples servers. Once the phones leave Apple they don't have control anymore. Meaning there are truly no limitations to a Iphone if you are willing to jailbreak. Which has went to court and is fully legal now regardless of how bad Apple wants it to be. Apple can't even stop people from stealing paid app store apps on daily basis for years and years let alone try to stop a modded Iphone4 using advanced voice control technology.

The Siri app requires a back end server to work - where the server program runs..... Its a client/server application. The piece on the iPhone needs the piece on the server to function....

I'm certainly hoping for the jailbreak developers to work some magic and give us Siri. Otherwise, my wife is going to be able to gloat over me with her 4S. Of course I'll be able to gloat over her when I get my 6 next year, but that's another matter entirely.

It won't run natively on the 4 for sure. My guess is that because it's so deeply integrated into the OS now (as opposed to being a stand alone app) it needs that extra processing power to run well. Jailbreakers may find a way after it's been out for a while but only time will tell.
