Does anyone know why the signal on my 3gs would immediately drop to 1 bar as soon as I press the home button then slowly increase back to 5 bars?

It's the second revision of the 3GS with the new bootrom.
If you can I'd try to restore as new and see if it still happens ( don't restore from backup ). If that fails, your provider may be having issues in the area, call and find out. If that fails, go to an Apple store if possible.
