what's that lock icon near the battery badge?

it locks your screen in portrait mode-so if your phone turned sideways, it would still remain portrait mode while using it.

to enable it double tap your home button/swipe left-you'll see your 'ipod' controls & a symbol of a lock in a box - tap that to enable the portrait mode lock, or tap again to disable it
