I am looking for a phone for my wife , she is not fond of mobiles , she only wants it for calling , messaging and whatsapp. Should I go for 3gs 2011 model . At present it is working fine . Is whatsapp works fine on ios 5.0.1 ?

Well first go to the apps website and see how far back the app is supported if your still interested in getting her an unsupported phone
I recommend at least getting the 4s which still enjoys Apple support for the time being
Ideally a nice 5C would be a great phone
