Sent as imessage at first then said sent as text message?

So my friend downloaded the new ios5 software and he started to text me and I noticed the conversation started to turn blue so i noticed he had an iPhone with ios5 and iMessage. Then i went back to the conversation and it said "sent as text message" what happened? At first it was sent as iMessage then said sent as text message?

It probably couldn't send as an iMessage, it defaults to text after 5 minutes, or so.

Note that behavior can be turned off in the messages settings.

because its sent through Apples servers (like Blackberry does with BBM) - if it cant connect, it reverts to a text so it gets through. - as said above, you can turn it off.... but if there is an issue, who knows how long it would take to get to the recipient?
