When one opens the contacts app, it displays the last accessed contact (or at least displays in the middle of the alphabet). Is there a shortcut to get back to the search box at the top of the list?

Yes, simply tap on the top of the screen. Where the time is. This applies to browsing on Safari as well. If you are on the bottom of the page and want to get to the top quickly just tap the top...
