Depending on your iOS version, swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the Control Center. Tap on the screen mirroring option to select the device it is mirroring to. Afterwards, select “stop mirroring”.

If I swipe down from the top of the screen, my lock screen pic comes up? I am on 13.1.1 I can swipe up from the bottom and the control centre comes up but I can't do anything by touching the screen monitoring, it has a spinning icon and touching does nothing?

You may need to reboot your device to fix the issue.

I didn't ever connect with the mirroring, I just pushed screen mirror on and I can't stop it from the icon from spinning after touching to try to turn it off. . I soft rebooted it many times to no avail.

Swipe down from the right corner to bring the control panel.

Wait. Do you have an TV? If you do not, it is going to spin because it is searching for one.

While spinning do you see the TV logo? If so, tap it. Since you don’t have TV you’ll get an error say cannot connect cause signal is too weak. Click okay and that should stop it.

No apple tv, simply pushed the screen mirror and now I can't stop the icon from spinning.

It only spins when you go to the Control Center to view the screen mirroring option, right? If so, don’t sweat it. It’s not hurting anything.

Could you try switching off the WIFi on the device for a few minutes? It might stop the cycle of searching and thus restore the status quo.
