Screen becomes unresponsive while on a call

When I am on a call on my week old 32gig 3Gs the screen goes dead. For instance, if I need to look up a number, or even end a call, when I take my face away from the screen it lights up like it should, but only for about half a second. It then becomes black and unresponsive for anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds. Has anybody dealt with anything like this before or have any idea how to fix this. Its a major hassle to take 30 seconds just to hang up the phone. Thanks in advance

is your case somewhat blocking the face sensor? Remove your case and try to make a call...

Where is the face sensor?? I have a Speck Candyshell case, so I dont think that it is blocking any sensor. Thanks for the try tho

no that case wont block it, now the question I hate to ask...

When you bought your iPhone, it came with a piece of plastic wrapped over the screen, you removed it correct?

the girl who sold it to me at the att store removed it..... why do you ask? (im very nervous in asking this question) I did put a screen protector on the screen tho...The ones that the sell at the att store.

some people do not remove it, and it can affect performance especially with hearing but also with sensors

Anybody else have any idea whats wrong??
