Can ringtones be downloaded directly to the iPhone or do I need to do it thru iTunes?

its gotta be done through itunes

but if you jailbreak it, there are other programs you can use
those programs let you even change your text, email, lock-screen, etc tones.

Pretty new to iPhone and not sure about jailbreaking just yet
