Rune Stone Reader is an entertainment app designed to help you predict your future or answer a certain questions. Rune Stones have been around for hundreds, if not thousands, of years, so it was only a matter of time until someone put them on the iPhone.

Note: Rune stones are meant for entertainment purposes only, and if you actually base any decisions on them...well...that is entirely up to you.

The concept of Rune Stones is that you "throw" them, and the ones that are important or relevant to your future are the ones that are selected. Rune Stones can be used to answer a yes/no question, predict a small part about your future, or be used to answer a question about your future. Rune Stone Reader incorporates all of these features.

When you start the app, you have the choice of choosing Oracle (yes/no question), Single Rune cast (using one Rune Stone), three Rune cast (three rune stones), or a customize cast. With a customize cast, you can choose what three attributes you want to look at - conflict, future, movement, past, self, or spirit.

With the three or one rune stone cast, those "fields" are chosen for you. The specific rune that comes up for each field is supposed to tell you something - either about the question, or about the general future.

Each rune stone has a specific image, and a specific meaning (depending if it is forwards or backwards). It is up to your to interpret their meaning relevant to your question or your future.

The app also keeps a "diary" of the castings you have made so you can go back and look to see how accurate (or inaccurate) they were. There is a list of the specific rune stones, and what each one means.

It would be nice if you could choose from different tile sets - more ancient "stones" for example, or beads with the runs on them. As it is, it looks like you are simply using a wooden chip or something. The app could also include some sound effects or make use of the accelorometer to "cast" the stones, but it doesn't do that. It could even the app more interactive - having you pick out the rune stones directly on the screen.

Pros: Fun program in the vein of a tarot deck.

Cons: Simplistic graphics, could make use of accelorometer.

All in all, if you want a fun program to predict the future, for $.99 this might be fun to try. The graphics are limited and it doesn't make full use of the iPhone features, but it is still nicely presented and I like the fact it includes information about the rune stones and a list of the various stone. Plus, the customization option is nice as well. This app was originally $3.99, so the price may be going up. Three and a half out of five stars.

EDIT: I just accidentilly noticed that you CAN adjust the rune stones when you create a customize cast (which is then used as your three rune stone cast). If you change the rune stones for this, the rune stone images change for ALL the casting.

Rating scale:

* = No redeeming qualities or features, probably not worth it even if it is free
** = Few redeeming qualities, or is simply isn't worth the price
*** = Some good features but also some clear flaws.
**** = A solid app, worth the money if interested, a few flaws or problems or slightly overpriced
***** = Top of the line app, no problems or drawbacks.

Price is factored into the ratings. Ratings are lowered if I feel the price of the app outweighs the benefits/enjoyment/features it provides. Likewise, an app that is a good value for the money will have a higher rating.
