Lights Off is another app by Peerium. It is a puzzle game with the goal of "turning off" all the lights on the game board. The game board consists of a grid (either 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, or 7x9) that starts off with some of the squares yellow (on) and some of the sqaures black/clear (off). By tapping sqaures one at a time, you turn the other sqaures on or off. The goal is reached either by luck, or by figuring out the patterns that controls how the lights are turned on or off.
I have seen these kinds of puzzles before on the computer, and they can be fun to do. The ability to alter the grid size makes the game a little more challenging, but once you figure out the patten for turning lights on and off, the game becomes relatively easy to solve. Of course, there is still some challenge to figure out the pattern of strokes to finally get all the lights off.
The graphics are simplistic, and I admit I was a little disappointed by them. There is a nice night/moon background screen, but there isn't any ability of change or alter the wallpaper. In addition, the simple sqaures are...well...simplistic, so the graphics dont' really provide any additional enjoyment of the game - it is all about the puzzle. It would be nice if different templates were added so you could customize the grids (making them Christmas lights, or candles, or a variety of other options). Improving the graphics would really go a long way, in my opinion.
One way that the game could be modified to increase interest is to be able to choose between various "rules" for turning lights on and off. I am not a mathematician, so I don't know if it would work out, but allowing for different rule sets governing how the lights are activated or turned off would increase the long-term enjoyment of the game. In the interest of full disclosure, I was given a free promo to review this game.
Pros: Puzzle can be challenging, especially on larger grids
Cons: Graphics aren't too developed, no ability to modify "rules", can't customize graphics.
All in all, the game can be fun for people who like to be challenged by this kind of puzzle. Don't buy it for the graphics, buy it for the game play itself. The ability to change the grid size is nice, and can lead to more complexity, although it would be nice to be able to customize it a little bit. At $.99, the app is not overpriced, and I give it three and a half out of four stars.
