A video on Facebook for a handful of hours caused a 1/5th of a billion dollar price reduction? Given the deal would be announced publicly in 3 weeks — not exactly leaking Apple Car’s precise launch date 2 years out — I’m skeptical this could be the main cause for that kind of reduction. Unless Beats was desperate to make this deal — which is possible — this kind of price change suggests something within Beats books caused a final revaluation of the offer.
While the price tag was high either way, in some ways Apple needed this more than Beats needed to sell. Steve Jobs reportedly didn’t want streaming. But the iTunes music purchase model was clearly on the down slope. Music was synonymous with Apple (iTunes) yet they were letting it slip away. Beats allowed a fast track seque. After Beats, Apple became much more audio focused too. I assume Beats gave Apple this roadmap as well as roadmap to AirPods? (If true then the Beats purchase was a steal for Apple).
