My son has a 3gs that he recently loaded with ios5. He says its been acting glitchy, going to a hold status sometimes. someone suggested doing a restore as new and doing the process again with ios5? How exactly should he do that? wipe phone clean like he was selling it and upgrade ios again?

If you restore as new you will lose all the settings and app data on the iPhone. If you are ok with this then plug it into iTunes and on the main splash page for the iPhone click restore.

If I were you first would run a backup first then restore from that backup and see if that helps... if not, then restore as new.
