Is there a way to get rid of contact pictures in Messages app?

They somehow appeared after my upgrade to iOS 9 and I don't really attach photos to my contacts...

Those pictures are taken from your contacts. I'm looking at my phone right now, and any of my contacts without a picture don't have a picture in iMessage.

There is no way to disable the "feature". If you don't have a photo for a contact, it will show a bubble with the initials of the contact.
I reverted back to 8.4.1 because I could not deal with those bubbles/contact photos in the messages app, and for a few other reasons that I find make iOS 9 incomplete, broken, and not ready for prime time. As well as things Apple does not give us options to disable, like the leftmost search screen(Siri/spotlight search), aforementioned contact photos in messages, the broken settings app that opens already a few lines down the screen and just the overall poor performance.

Try updating the "view" setting under "display and brightness" to "zoomed". You may not like the zoom feature but the contact bubbles/pictures should disappear.

Is this feature not available for the iPhone 5c? I read somewhere that it was only for the iPhone 6+ but with the iOS 9 update, all iPhones will now be able to see thumbnails on the message app. I cannot seenit working on my 5c unless it is not avaialble for this phone. I saw one user thet he uses a 5s and it is working. Please help.

What do you mean then? My question is if the iPhone 5c is capable of getting that feature where you can see thumbnail of your contacts in the message app while on iOS 9 or is it still exclusive to 6+ users. Please clarify

Even in iOS 9.1 beta 2, the Message Contact photos is not available on the iPhone 5. I don't have a 5C or 5S to confirm what is available on those devices, but I'm going to make the assumption that it's somehow related to screen real estate... and that nothing below the iPhone 6 will have it.

It's not available on the iPhone 5, so I am assuming that it is NOT available on the 5C or 5S. It is available on the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S and 6S Plus.

YESS!!! I finally found it and it's so simple!! Go into settings> messages> and turn off "show contact photos"
