Relay not working with 3rd gen

I don’t use it like I used to with bigger phone screens but I think it’s a 3rd gen I got in 2013. It was the latest at the time. I use it for when I want a larger screen for vids and my son’s percussion lessons. It wouldn’t pick up the FT on my iPad. Funny because I tested it from my teens 6 and it picked up. Any ideas? *
