Questions About iPhone 3

I have a few questions about the iPhone 3

1- I already own an iPod Touch and almost all the apps and podcasts I used to use no longer work with my iPod. Is that the same with iPhone 3?

2- If I bought the iPhone 3 could I download the latest software on it to access the most current apps?

I have an old iPhone 3G and the latest software it can run is iOS 4.2.1 so most of the newer apps probably won't work on it. If I were you, I'd consider getting an iPhone 3GS.
