Purchased a pioneer avh4100nex carplay connection issues.

Purchased a pioneer avh4100nex and downloaded the new firmware to update the unit for various app features. After installing the update my phone won't automatically start carplay like in the videos, even the update didn't appear to make the unit any different. I went to the smart phone setup and usb/iphone/carplay is on but no connection. When i browsed my phone i saw a carplay setup but only with steering wheel controls but my car doesn't support that because i have a older vehicle. Looks very easy on the videos as if it auto springs about but i haven't been able to feel the luxuries of the system yet without carplay from my phone. Im using a iPhone 5s please help
