proper way to exit a app

I have not yet got the iphone but I will in a few weeks when it comes in. Coming from Android you have to back out or exit a app in the proper way or it will continue to run in the back ground and use up precious resources and battery. In the iPhone world other than using the home key is there any other way or proper way to exit an app and return to the home screen?

You press the home button. If you want to kill an app that is not working properly, you double click the home button and hold down the apps until they start to wiggle, then just press the little red circle above them. But in no way do you need to do this all the time. The iPhone suspends apps not in use so leaving apps "open" has no effect on battery life.
