Possible bad hard drive. Not sure which ssd to buy macbookair2011

Computer won't boot. Shows a folder with a question mark. I was able to get in to the wizard. It show the disc 0 but no disc 1. It's only showing like 250 mb of storage I'm assuming it's a partition.
My question is....which hard drive should I get for a replacement and how do I install a more current operating system on the drive? Assuming that is the solution to my problem.

But, of course, the other question is whether it's worth investing anything into an 11 year old computer. Perhaps it would be better to spend money on a newer computer?

I was thinking the same thing. I had a white 2009 MacBook that I kept it a very long time before I finally moving on to something newer. When I did get the newer device, the difference between the two was ridiculous and it confirmed I kept the old MacBook too long.
