Portrait Mode demo not smooth

I tried out a Black (not Jet Black) iPhone 7 Plus display model at my local  Store using the Portrait Mode feature. I focused it on two other iPhones and the tops of the iPhones were blurred out. Is this a bug or does it depend on what the subject is?

Portrait Mode is dependent on a lot of factors.
The intensity and the angle of the lighting, the background of the object, the contrast of the object against its background and the shape of the object as well as the colors and many other factors in if Portrait Mode works or not.
So I don't believe it was a bug but rather a unsuccessful experience.

I absolutely love Portrait Mode when it works as it's supposed to. It's biggest downfall I've found is lighting. If the lighting isn't just right then it doesn't work well. It's pretty great as a first run feature, but I can't wait until it improves.
