Photos are still on my phone even after asking iPhoto to remove them

I've been trying to clean out all the photos on my phone using iPhoto. However, even after iPhoto says that all pictures have been removed, they are still on my phone. Am I doing something wrong? Or is there something going on in the background that is preventing the photos from being erased?

Are the photos that remain in your Photostream or shared via the new iCloud Photo Library (beta)? In any case, if the photos are indeed saved on your computer via iPhoto, go ahead an manually delete the photos from your phone if they are indeed still present on the phone.

I've turned off my photo stream and the iCloud sharing, so I'm assuming that isn't it. I was dreading the thought of manually deleting the photos as I've got 3000 of them. Maybe it's because I chose to keep the photos after the initial import?
