phantom app update & repetitve passwords: Q?

hoping for a solution.

in iTunes, i have an application which is indicating a need for updating. when i click on the small -> button near the bottom of iTunes which says "Update 1 Application", iTunes requires me to enter my account user name and password quite a few times, in excess of atleast 10 times.

on the device, there are no updates required... any ideas?
