Passcode Lock - Your opinion

They have probably already been a similiar thread or discussions but I'm very curious to know how many people use this feature on their iphones/ipods.

For those who do use it - Why what are the benefits in your opinion.
Also for those who dont use it, why do you think they is no need to or why dont you bother?

I've used it occasionally, but have always found it a nuisance after a few hours. The passcode input is a bit laborious (IMO, especially compared to Android's pattern swipe-style unlock) and isn't all that secure when other people are looking at you/your phone (numbers are pretty easy to discern). It does, though, keep the iPhone secure against complete strangers--what it was designed to do, I guess.

All depends on personal preference/paranoia level, I think.

I actually saw my friend do the pattern swipe and was able to mimic that pretty easily.

I use passcode because I don't make a habit of unlocking my phone in front of others, and pple aren't that nosy, around me anyways and when they grab my phone (when it's placed on my desk or something) they always have to ask me to unlock for them before they can play around with it

I really don't feel comfortable since I text a lot..to let just anyone go through my phone.

The benefits are pretty obvious. Try this... pretend you lost your iPhone without the passcode lock... not a good feeling at all. Now pretend you lost it with the passcode lock... not so bad. I've used it since day one. You get used to it, only takes about 1-2 secs. IMO, you're only asking for trouble by not using it. Kind of like not backing up your iPhone or computer.. pretty dumb.

I agree. I use mine when I'm not home just incase I lose it or its stolen (have to pry it out of my hands though!!)

I agree with the idea of using one. There is too much info on these phones. I didnt use one before, but now i do. I am curious what times people set them to. Mine is in general set to 4 hours. I do bump it down to 1 hour if I am traveling or have a higher chance of losing it, or leaving it laying out somewhere. I also have it set to erase after 10 code attempts.

Only one person had axcess my phone without my permission. It was the waitress at the resturant where my phone fell out of my jacket and ended up under the table. She went through my address book and left a message at my home and work. Imagine how freaked I would be if I didn't find out it was missing until much later. I had made many stops that evening and I was able to run back and get it as soon as I got home and got the message.

if I lost mine and called it myself and someone picked up do you think they'd return it if it's unlocked free and clear or would they return it since it wouldn't be of any use?

unless of course there's a master reset that can make it like new or some way to hack it but the average Joe wouldn't have thought of that much less attempt to..

I think its a important part of owning a smartphone you keep valuable data on it and it should be protected in case lost or stolen

I have left my iPhone on the table at dinner with friends and occasionally someone thinks they're clever and posts to my Facebook. That's not ok.

Also, Dropbox can have potentially serious data in it and adding a passcode is a first protection against discovery.

The more they want enterprise to use these phones, the more they have to do to secure them. The present lock only keep out nosey friends and co-workers. A quick restore and a new sim and your phone is gone. There are even programs that might be able to retrieve the data. What i would like to see is a Boot level lock that can make the phone 100% useless if lost or stolen. find my iphone is useless if the phone is off or have been restored.

I use the lock - takes a second or two to enter four digits. I have Facebook & the AT&T app set for auto login, so I'd rather not have someone pick up my phone & have unfettered access to these two pieces of my life. Some may call me stupid, but I also have some confidential info stored on Notes, stuff not for prying eyes. My 3GS is also set to erase all data after ten invalid unlock attempts.

Some call it paranoia, I prefer to call it a heightened state of awareness.

I've always used mine but I have it set to be delayed by five minutes that way if I need to get back quickly after closing it off I don't have to enter the code every time.

I use the passcode lock faithfully. It's like second nature now. Additionally I've installed iProtect and it's an excellent feature. You can put a passcode on your texts, contacts, emails. Basically any app you want. I have nosey folks all around me so for me it's very useful. I wouldn't know what I'd do without it but then again if I'd ever lost it, there's always wiping the phone from mobile me.

I used it for about a week, but it began to get annoying so fast. I only ever use it when I feel it'll be appropriate, like if I'm at work or around campus, just incase someone gets ahold of it.

I used to use the passcode lock set to 5 minute delay, but when I started using the phone in my car to play music, it got annoying quick. I now have it set to 1 hour delay.

Anyone else (with an iPhone 4) have the bug where you can only set the passcode lock for "immediately"?
I liked using the passcode lock on my iPhone 3G, and had it set for an hour, but I don't want to enter it every time I access my phone.

If so that would be ideal really because I'm not too worried about my mates picking my phone up, it's when strangers would get hold of the phone when it becomes a problem, but with this would help cure the issue. Any info would be good.

Close. If you have it set to 1 hour and your phone has been in sleep mode for 1 hour or more, it will ask for the passcode when you go to use it again.

Ah, it would be a lot better if it asked for the passcode after you set it too regardless weather it's sleep mode, or been used imo.

It will be a little bit of a pain if it keeps asking for the passcode every fews mins, I'm always on it.
