OtterBox claims that the Defender protects your iPhone against drops, shocks, dust, and scratches with its three layers of protection and built-in screen protector. I'm analyzing my Defender 4S case I just Don't see how. Maybe I'm missing something?

1st Observation: The Silcone will absorb shock and should be between your iphone and the plastic shell not the other way around.

I'll update as I continue to analyze..

You maybe right and thus the reason for this particular line in their limited warranty:

"...the limited warranty does not, under any circumstances, cover the replacement or cost of any electronic device or personal property inside or outside of the OtterBox product."
https://forums.imore.com/e?link=htt...ranty-full%2Cdefault%2Cpg.html&token=Z50DRkKC

To be fair, I did NOT read the entire warranty...:)

My husband buys a Defender with every new device. He has dropped his phone more than once whilst climbing the mast of Naval destroyers. They definitely do provide protection.

I've had and have the defender case on all of my phones and must say never a scratch. Maybe I'm lucky, but I won't chance it.

Lifeproof claims this and doesn't then have silicone

I wouldn't trust LP against drops. I've dropped my while it was in my OB defender. Not a scratch or a crack one.

LifeProof only claims to protect from 6 foot drops, or 2 meters for those who use the metric system. Otterbox Defender is a lot more protective from drops, but LifeProof provides better overall protection. Mainly water protection, I have gotten to try the Otterbox Armor, Incipio Atlas or Seidio Obex though to see which of those 4 works best for those overall protections. But nothing beats a Defender from major drops.

I agree with you, though just based on how the cases feel, I have the lifeproof and defender for the iphone 5.
I haven't tested either intensively, just some minor drops here and there, but there are plenty of videos on YouTube with drops from much higher than 6.6 feet. I don't think I am usually in a situation where a drop would be from higher than that. I don't think the defender claims protection from any height but it does seem more sturdy in a sense. I am on the side of the OP that it may seem more logical to have the silicone on the inside.

Interesting topic. As I mentioned in a few other threads. The Armor case which is more heavy duty then the defender has silicone in side and I dropped a 4S from about 4 feet and the phone shattered inside the case.

Wow, that is ridiculous ! Goes to show you that is it lands on the wrong angle you are screwed. I mean they make this Gorilla glass/2 seem indestructible, but that is far from the truth as you witnessed first hand with you phone enclosed in a tank.
I think Corning should provide some sort of warranty to back up their product

IMO go with the defender. More protection. The LP is fine around water and I do use it when I jump with my horse as part of what I jump over is a water puddle but other than that and pool time during the summer, I stick with either a Ballistics HC or a Defender case.

I'm on my phone right now and can't look but I recall a YouTube vid or a commercial of some NHL player slap shotting a phone in a particular case and the phone lived. I'm not that daring but if I can remember tomorrow I'll look up which case it was.
