Old iPad running iOS 5.1.1

Ive recently purchased an old iPad and it is running IOS 5.1.1 how do I upgrade it ? When I go into settings and software update it says software is up to date and there is no option to upgrade

If it's the original version, you cannot. iOS 5.1.1 was the end of the line for that device.

If it's a different version, go to Settings > General > Software Update and do the update.
