Since the 24" M1 got introduced, I thought it was about time to replace my 2014 27" iMac with a newer M1 27"... and I've been waiting ever since.

• Now I've read some rumors about Apple NOT planning another 27" iMac for probably the next few years.
And if it's not coming, I'm probably better off buying the 24" instead.

Can anyone please confirm if this is indeed true, and if it's reliable enough?

Considering that the 27-inch iMac has been completely discontinued, I would say it is unlikely. Reference: https://www.imore.com/apple-discontinues-27-inch-imac-following-apple-event

This said, even if a product has been discontinued, it does not mean that a variation might not appear in some future. The Apple Thunderbolt Display and MacBook being examples; the Thunderbolt Display (discontinued in June 2016) eventually has its replacement with the Studio Display (introduced in March 2022), and the MacBook (discontinued in July 2011) with the MacBook (introduced in April 2015)

Apple didn’t outright announce the words “the 27” IMac is dead”, however, they pretended and acted as if it is dead. They stated the Mac Pro is the last Mac left to transition to Apple Silicon. The Studio was seemingly made Apple’s new centerpiece go to for a desktop above consumer level. When the AppleStore came back up after the event, the 27” IMac is erased completely from it.

I also heard if you play the Apple Event’s audio backwards, a voice can be heard saying “IMac27 is dead”. /s
