New iPhone shoots 4k video, new Apple TV can't play it.

Of course it'd be better if the box supported 4K.

Maybe it'll be enabled in a software/firmware update, maybe we'll all have to buy new ones in a couple of years.

Apple usually lags behind the cutting edge in specs to see where the market is going.

"Yet" is the only important part of your post. In less than 2 years it will be the norm and Apple will refresh the Apple TV with 4K enabled and we will buy new boxes all over again and that was their plan all along.

I think you should've quote both of my posts ...

Keeping up with the Joneses ... Plain and simple.
Next year this time we'll all be talking about who's upgrading to the AppleTV S with 4k support, a faster processor, support for tvOS 2, and more storage space ...
What are you guys new to Apple products, or something? ...

I've been thinking this 4k biz over a bit. It seems you're all expecting way too much of this. Not only is there nothing to play 4k video on, but even if you could, you wouldn't be able to tell much difference between it and 1080p HD. Not on a small screen. Don't let yourselves get taken in by those magical ads Apple puts out. It ain't like that. If you have a 60" 4k TV, you might see the difference. But at what cost? It requires enormous bandwidth to stream, and requires costly new backend infrastructure to broadcast. Then there's the huge amount of storage space it requires. LOL And Y'all want this?
The truth is that 4K is a technical spec with more implications for cable companies than everyday consumers. 4K will not make your crappy home videos look much better than they do. On my iPhone 6s Plus, I'll stick with 720p HD. It looks pretty good to me.
