With the 1.3.0 update, the release notes mention some users testing the new distance tracker (since they took away the 1,2,3 footprint indicator). Here are a few I have seen around the web:

I like the change -- gives you an idea of where to go, it seems.

Looks like this, only shows at nearby Pok?Stops though, still useful.

Very cool. I'm visiting my son in Orange County (CA) and I have the new feature, but do not have the pix in the background showing a more specific location... but that is coming I think.

Ok, do you have just the grass or whatever? That would be what everyone has so far except those who are testing the other.

you're right. I just have the grass. But I have noticed that the Nearby box is now coordinated between 2 different people's game going at the same time -- and the Pokeymon's are the same for both games.
But on the down side of the new update, being a passenger in a car and playing the game is bad in the respect that the warning message pops up every few minutes and can get in the way of game play....

So the update to the nearby screen makes it two screens basically. Currently only those in certain cities have a Nearby screen. Everyone else has Sightings. Sightings shows Pok?mon in the general area that you have to walk around to find. Nearby let's you select that Pok?mon and it will show you what Pok?Stop they are at.
