The 16GB version of the 5th generation now comes in all of the regular iPod touch colors and has a camera on the back. I don't know why Apple didn't do this in the beginning.

I know a couple of people with the old 16GB version. They paid more money and they didn't get to choose a color and get a back camera. The 16GB model is now selling at $199.

That's always a risk when buying a new product. I imagine it took a while to get the economies of scale that Apple needed to get the profit margin they'd like on the 16gb iPod touch 5th gen

The 5th Gen iPod Touch has been out for several years now. The original 16 GB was paired down in various ways to make it more affordable. That looks to be a nonissue now as the premium specs are introduced into the lowest SKU while the higher capacity units are also given a price reduction.

At this point, it's about making an older, and increasingly niche, product more attractive.

This is how it should've been in the first place! The only problem is I probably would've got the iPod instead of my iPad Mini Retina :)

If there was a $50 difference in prices at the beginning, I would have gotten a 64GB iPod. Currently, it's the same price as the 32GB model when I got it. A year certainly brings great change. :)
